LEBKACHEN

2 3/4 cup all-purpose flour - sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon nutmag
1/2 cup finely chopped candied mixed fruit
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts
1 cup Karo syrup, blue label
3/4 cup brown sugar - firmly packed
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon greated lemon rind
1 egg - slightly beaten
powdered sugar and water for icing

Sift together flour, sofa and spices.  Stir in candied fruit and nuts.  Add Karo syrup, sugar, lemon juice and rind to beaten egg.  Mix well.  Stir in flour-fruit-nut mixture.  Divide dough in half and turn out on well greased and floured baking sheet.  Moisten hands and flatten dough to 1/8 inch thickness. (Dough will rise during baking.)  Bake at 400 degrees 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned and firm to the touch.  Remove from oven and immediately brush with thin icing made with powdered sugar and water.
Cut into squares.  Decorate with cut-outs and colored icing.  Cover tightly and store to mellow.

Yield: 5 dozen cookies
